You Live Where? How the Building Industry Is Helping to Shed the Stigma of Mobile Homes

Unfortunately, mobile homes have typically been viewed as being on the lower end of the home-ownership spectrum.  Most likely stemming from the fact that people with less money were often looked down on in the past, the good news is that the state of the world has changed in the last 20 years, and with the economic downturn, many are looking for more affordable living solutions for their families.  An added bonus is that the industry itself has completely changed as well – mobile homes are NOT what they used to be.  Take a look at this picture:

In general, gone are the run-down “trailer parks” of the past, and many mobile homes are now part of a greater community, often with their own strict rules for those that choose to live there.  Also, with the manufacturing process of these mobile homes now improved, many are now indistinguishable from a conventional home; you’ll feel like you’re driving down any typically suburban street.  Mobile home owners tout the fact that they generally own their home outright without a loan, and simply pay rent on the land they occupy, often working out to about half what someone would pay in rent per month in a comparable area.

Whether it’s a mobile, modular or manufactured home, it’s starting to make more practical sense to own property once considered “substandard,” since there’s nothing better these days that saving money while also maintaining the high aesthetic value most of us look for in our own home.
