It doesn’t matter if your home is brand new or an antique passed down through family - mobile homes can be great do-it-yourself projects for home design! No matter your budget, there are many easy decorating tips that can make mobile homes homier, give them a fresh appearance, or make them look bigger! Here are some decoration tips for mobile homes that will help you personalize your living space.
Lighting
Make the most of exterior light by placing sheer drapes over the windows. These will allow natural light to filter into the living space making it more bright and inviting. In spaces that need more privacy, consider pleated shades or sheer venetians that create an opaque shade when closed. Also, consider placing mirrors across from windows to help bounce light around the room to give the appearance that the space is bigger. Replace any fluorescent lighting with lights that are brighter and give off a more natural light, opposed to what feels like a hospital setting.
Floors
Many mobile homes come with utility grade carpeting, but this is nothing that can’t be fixed or replaced easily. Consider replacing the carpeting with new tile or hardwood flooring using large area rugs to create comfortable seating areas with minimal expense. If wall-to-wall carpeting is more your style, replace the cheaper carpeting with a more luxurious one or consider carpet tile, which is an easy to maintain carpeting source that is so easy to install your children can help you do it, and it comes at a fraction of the cost!
Bathroom
Mobile home bathrooms are usually small, so they can be easy rooms for small upgrades. Paint dingy walls a new bright color or use faux-tile contact paper to create the illusion of tile. Another technique is to paint the bathroom a very neutral and light color and to add vibrant accessories, such as towels, to give the space a pop of brightness. Adding a matching area rug and shower curtain to pull everything together creates a complete look!
Walls
Mobile homes that are older tend to have paneled wood walls that can create a dark and cold feel. Painting over your paneled walls is one way to brighten up the space. Don’t be afraid to use color like warm reds or earthy greens. Be sure to use a primer on your walls first to make the most out of your color and make the paint go over the paneling smoother. As well, don't ignore the ceilings, which can often use a fresh coat of paint since they can easily become dingy over time.
Kitchen
Change dated wood cabinetry in a mobile home's kitchen by painting the wood to remove stains and give it a fresher look. If the cabinetry cannot be saved, consider just replacing the cabinet doors, which can give the whole kitchen a brand new look. Use smart design tips such as coordinating your counter top color with your hand towels to bring the whole kitchen design together.
